Zizi Azah Abdul Majid's THE HUMMINGBIRD
The Hummingbird is a play that stands at the inter-sectionality of faith, gender and politics. Catalysed by the cunningly simple question “What lies at the heart of faith?” The Hummingbird traverses a wide time frame and a breadth of geography to examine stories of women both historical and imagined. Part magical realism; part naturalistic, the play presents an enigmatic meditation on the negotiation of Faith. Faith as negotiated in the female body; Faith as negotiated in the landscape of family; Faith as negotiated in the inherently tragic politics of power.
The Hummingbird seeks to reveal that in spite of all our differences, petty or otherwise, the similarities in our humanity will be the foundation on which we imagine a world greater than the one we are destined to leave behind.
The Hummingbird is a commissioned work by National Arts Council Young Artist Award recipient Zizi Azah, written specifically for BA(Hons) Acting Level 3 students as their graduation production. The play will be directed by LASALLE alumna and 2014 The Straits Times’ Life! Theatre Award winner Edith Podesta in collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Brian Gothong Tan.
The Hummingbird contains content with some coarse language and mature themes which is more suitable for audiences 16 years and above.
The Hummingbird is held as part of The LASALLE Show 2016.
A showcase of the works of students from Design, Fine Arts, Film, Media Arts, Dance, Music, Theatre, Art Therapy, and Arts Management Programmes, The LASALLE Show 2016 marks the grand finale of an artistic education in creativity and imagination, and the transformation of these young talents into professional artists in the larger creative industries ecosystem.
